Tell Your Legislator to Restore Cuts Proposed in the Budget
Dear Advocate:
Late last week, the leaders of three of Pennsylvania's legislative caucuses proposed to end Pennsylvania's 75-day old budget impasse with a plan that would effectively reduce new funding for:
- Basic Education by 50 percent;
- Medical Assistance by 41 percent;
- Pre-K Counts by 21 percent; and
- Leave 16,000 children on the waiting list for child care subsidy.
To add insult to injury, this budget would preserve Pennsylvania's distinction as the only state that doesn't tax smokeless tobacco while sacrificing funding for the Children's Health Insurance Program!
Independent observers believe this plan is based on unrealistic one-time revenue projections that would require the Governor to make another round of deep cuts midway through this year.
Today rank and file Southeastern Pennsylvania Representatives urged caucus leaders to support a budget that restores cuts to education, health care and early childhood education. To fund these programs they seek a number of recurring revenue sources -- including smokeless tobacco and a tax on drilling natural gas.
We urge you to call your Representative and Senator today. Ask if they support restoring these cuts by introducing new sources of recurring revenue. If the answer is yes, thank them. If the answer is no, please urge them to support these programs on behalf of the state's children and families.
For your convenience you can click here to send an email to your legislators, but please act now! The people of Pennsylvania are waiting for a budget and time is of the essence.
Sincerely,
Shelly D. Yanoff
Executive Director
