Natural Gas Severance Tax

This afternoon the Pennsylvania House will vote on whether our state should join Texas, West Virginia and other natural gas-producing states by enacting a natural gas severance tax. PCCY believes this tax is crucial as long as Pennsylvania allows energy companies to drill. The tax will:

• Pay for state and local environmental costs associated with drilling;

• Provide an additional source of revenue for schools, early care and education, health care, child welfare, libraries and other services that have been reduced during the recession; and

• Cushion Pennsylvania against the loss of federal economic stimulus funding next year.

Legislators have until Friday to pass this tax—the only one presently available to prevent more deep cuts to this year’s budget. Click here to urge your legislators to pass a strong severance tax now.

Without the tax, education and human services are vulnerable to at least $70 million more in cuts this year and even deeper cuts next year.

Don’t delay! Contact your State Representative and Senator today.  Ask them to pass a strong severance tax NOW to prevent additional budget cuts in the future.

October 4th Voter Registration Deadline

Pennsylvania’s voter registration deadline is fast approaching. To vote in the November election, you must register by Monday, October 4.  If you or others you know are not registered, have moved recently or have not voted in the past three elections, you need to register now. Click here for more information.

There’s a lot at stake for Pennsylvania children in the next election. The people we elect to represent us in the US House and Senate will shape early care and education, K-12 education, access to health care and family economic security for years to come. They, as well as Pennsylvania’s next Governor and members of the General Assembly, will establish priorities that may or may not include children.  Make sure you are registered to vote by clicking here and be sure to vote for candidates who pledge to look out for kids!  Check PCCY's website for additional election resources.
