Help Prevent Cuts To Vital Services.
In late 2010, Congress was unable to agree on a budget for FY2011 and instead passed a Continuing Resolution that funds the federal government until March 4. As this date approaches, many new conservative members of Congress seated earlier this month have made deep cuts to the FY 2011 and FY 2012 budgets a top priority.
This week the House will vote on a proposal that would cut domestic discretionary spending back to 2008 levels.
These proposals would gut critical programs for many children, youth and families in Southeastern Pennsylvania. We know many families are barely getting by. In the two years since the recession began, demand for safety net services such as SNAP (formerly known as food stamps), Medicaid and child care for low-income working families has reached unprecedented levels. The last thing these children need are cuts to the education, child care, after-school, and other necessities that help them build a better future.
These cuts will neither stimulate the economy nor lower the deficit – they will simply make life more difficult for those who are already hurting and for the rest of American taxpayers, who will bear the long-term costs of inadequate supports for children and youth.
Once the House passes its version of the budget, the Senate must decide whether to follow suit. Make sure Senator Casey knows you support him retaining important safety net provisions for Pennsylvania’s families by clicking here.
House and Senate leaders will be working feverishly over the next two weeks to make key budget decisions and now is our time to weigh in.
Thank you.
