Save Federal Nutrition Programs in Budget & Debt-Reduction Talks!
Dear Friends,
As federal budget negotiations continue and the Super Committee works to produce $1.5 trillion in cuts to essential services, the programs that make up our nation’s nutrition safety net – SNAP, school meals, summer food, afterschool snacks and meals, WIC, and child care food – must be protected.
Click here to urge Congress to preserve these programs. Hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvania families struggle to provide their children adequate nutrition. Last year more than one in five faced food hardship. Far too many children in every Pennsylvania Congressional districts struggle with hunger.
SNAP, formerly known as food stamps, responded – and continues to respond – as families suffer the fallout of the recession. From December, 2007 to September of this year, the number of individuals who received SNAP in Southeastern Pennsylvania increased more than 50 percent! (Click here for details.)
Many local families have run out of unemployment benefits and high rates of joblessness are expected to linger well into the future. This combined with underemployment and stagnant wages means that hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvanians will continue to need help feeding their families.
To make this possible, Congress must abandon its “cuts-only” approach to reducing the deficit, and support policies to increase revenue along with making cuts.
Now is not the time to weaken SNAP or other child nutrition programs! Click here to tell Congress to preserve these programs for struggling families in our region.
Thank you,
Shelly Yanoff
