Help Prevent Harmful Cuts To Vital Programs.
When our state legislators passed this year’s budget in July, they made a commitment to enact a natural gas severance tax by October 1. Without this tax, child care, education, access to children’s health care and other services that children and families depend on are at risk of yet another round of budget cuts this year.
As a result of your efforts, the House kept its promise, passing a strong tax on gas extraction at Marcellus Shale (SB 1155) that will raise $70 million toward the general fund this year, and many times that in coming years. Passed last week, the House bill, comparable to West Virginia’s, puts Pennsylvania’s effective tax rate somewhere in the middle of the pack as compared to other natural gas-producing states. PCCY believes this tax is essential as long as Pennsylvania allows drilling. Click here to urge the Senate to act now.
Now it’s the Senate’s turn to act. The energy industry is lobbying for a much weaker bill than SB 1155. , That proposal will yield far less revenue than the state deserves in exchange for the removal of this nonrenewable resources. Importantly it will not provide the revenue to support the services our children and families need. (For details, see www.pennbpc.org)
Contact your Senators today and ask them to support PA’s future and pass a strong natural gas extraction bill. Click here to send a message to your Senator.
